JavaScript

It is pretty clear to me at this point – that every single one of the frameworks brings different reasons to choose it and has its own Pros and Cons.

TOP 3 reasons to choose AngularJS are:

  • User Interface
  • Flexibility
  • Testing.

PROS

  • Amazing UI Design
  • Simple Routing
  • Great Libraries.

CONS

  • Limited Routing
  • 3rd party integration is complex
  • Scopes are hard to debug.

TOP 3 reasons to choose ReactJS are:

  • SEO Effective
  • Ability to create own components [don’t rely only on PolymerJS & Shadow DOM]
  • Great Efficiency [due to own virtual DOM].

PROS

  • Smooth interface & easy2learn API
  • Easier importing and JS debugging
  • Higher performance compared to other JS frameworks.

CONS

  • Very sophisticated view layer
  • It’s a library only not a framework
  • Will require additional configuration if you integrate into an MVC framework.

TOP 3 reasons to choose Node.js are:

  • Server-side proxy
  • NPM
  • Data Streaming.

PROS

  • Shares same piece of code with both client and server-side
  • Easily stream big files
  • Easy2learn & have a vibrant and large community.

CONS

  • Relational database issues
  • Requires deep understanding of JS to work with it
  • It’s not scalable because one CPU is not enough to take advantage of multiple tasks.

Every business obviously has its own needs and every Developer has own preferences in terms of which framework they prefer the work with and clearly after this short research these are the heavyweight leaders.

Is there a potential rival (vue.js)? Yes, maybe, but that’s for another research and I am very keen and opened to hear your thoughts and suggestions.

Whats your favourite? Let me know in the comments.

M&E Manager Joins Our London Office

Olivia Finn becomes the latest recruiter to join our dynamic London office.

Olivia Finn - M&E Manager - London

Olivia has worked the majority of her career within sales, initially starting off selling “Spa Days” to unsuspecting targets on the streets of SOHO during University holidays. Following this, Olivia became a Project Manager within the London residential market selling refurbishment packages, initially for a developer for four years and then for her own business for a further three.
Deciding it was time to expand her skill set, Olivia joined a boutique search firm in London, where she spent five years honing her skills as a recruitment consultant specialising in Building Services and heading up their M&E Division.

Working out of our London office, Olivia will be heading up M&E recruitment for the region.

We would like to wish Olivia the best of luck in her new role, where we are sure that she will use her existing skills and experience to become a vital member of the London team.

If you work within M&E and are looking for a new role, register your details with us here.

Similarly, if you are looking for M&E staff to join your company, you can register a vacancy here or contact Olivia on 0203 367 2139.

How Should you Discuss Salary at an Interview?

Discussing a salary is one of those topics that some people don’t want to discuss, but at an interview it is a topic which is likely to come up. Edge Careers has taken a look at how you can best discuss your salary at the interview stage.

Don’t Under or Over Sell Yourself

When an interviewer asks you what your current salary is,  it is important that you tell the truth, as giving a false figure can have a disastrous effect on your chances of landing the role.

Everyone wants to move for more money, but if you sell yourself as earning more than you actually are, thinking that you can get a bigger pay rise, you can actually price yourself out of the job altogether and there is a chance you will be caught out and find yourself out of the running for the job.

The same can be said for underselling yourself, if your current salary is well below what this job is advertised as, then the interviewer will be thinking “are you at the right level for the role?” But it is still important to tell the truth, if your salary is well below the amount on offer and you are at the same level as the role you are interviewing for, then approach the subject yourself and say that you feel that you are significantly under paid in your current role.

When Should the Topic be Brought Up?

We believe that it is important to discuss what you can offer the company and the role before you discuss your salary. If your salary is brought up at the beginning of an interview, simply say that you would prefer to better understand the role and the company and discuss what you can offer before discussing your remuneration. This is so the interviewer is not put off by your salary requirements from the get go and will better understand what you can offer and if you would be “value for money”

Offer at Interview

If you have impressed the interviewer enough to be offered the job at the interview stage, it is important that you don’t let your adrenaline take over and instantly accept the job. You need to take the time to think about the offer, so a simple response would be, “thank you, it sounds like a great opportunity and I am very interested. I would like to take some time to consider your offer and I will be in touch shortly to let you know my decision”. Although you need the time to consider your options, you do need to do it quickly so that the employer does believe that you are genuinely interested in the role.

How To Handle A Counter Offer

Receiving a counter offer is a common part of the recruitment process. When you tell your boss that you are leaving, they may do what they can to keep you.

At some point in a career most people will have received a counter offer. It is a nice feeling to think your current company (which you may not be dead set on leaving) wants to keep you.

Once you have been counter offered you will be asking yourself the big question, do I stay or do I go? Edge Careers have taken a look at some points for you to consider when you’re trying to make this decision.

Delayed Offer

Why has it taken you to say that you are leaving the company for them to then offer you a pay rise or a promotion? Surely if they truly valued you in their business they would have already put you on the best salary and in the best position within the company.

You need to ask yourself, am I really valued and appreciated or am I just another body within the company?

Reason for Leaving

Why are you looking to leave the company in the first place? Is it solely for more money or is their an underlining issue?

If it was just for a pay rise then accepting a counter offer is probably the best thing to do as you are already in a job and company you know. If however there is an underlining issue it is important for you to remember that this issue will still exist even with the pay rise and/or promotion.

A lot of people who accept a counter offer usually end up leaving their current company anyway as the reason for leaving hasn’t changed.

Added Pressure

Yes moving to a new company is going to be a stressful and nervous experience, but thinking you are playing it safe by staying with your current company may not be as easy as you think.

Accepting a counter offer from your current employer could bring on additional stress with an additional workload and higher expectation. Also, you have now shown that you are willing to leave the company so your loyalty will now be in question.

Be careful when you come to receiving a counter offer and take these points into account. Also one of our Permanent Recruitment Consultants, Stuart Smith, wrote an article on accepting a counter offer which you can view here.

Choosing the right recruitment agency for you

choosing the right recruitment agency

Working in the construction industry, where the need for quality staff is growing and the number of skilled workers is shrinking, recruitment agencies are playing a vital role. Love them or Loath them, recruitment agencies are key to the growth of your business.

If you require staff to work for your company, but you do not have the time or resources to find the perfect candidate, then a recruitment agency will be required and choosing the right one can be a hard decision.

Choosing the right recruitment agency will be the difference between receiving quality or unsuitable candidates. You will need to make sure to find one that will take a proactive headhunt approach and not just sift through job boards.

Most recruitment agencies will claim to be the best at what they do and understand the industry they are working in, but only a few actually do. It is key that when you select a recruitment consultancy, you test their knowledge so that you can be reassured that they do know what you are looking for.

The same goes for candidates. Choosing the right recruitment agency to represent you will be the key to how you are presented to a client. A lot of agencies will get your CV and shoot it across to every contractor they can think of, only a few will actually take the time to understand what you are looking for in your next career move. At Edge Careers, we aim to meet with every candidate to build a profile on exactly what you are looking for and we will agree a target list of companies that we will put your details forward to.

It is important that as a candidate you agree a list of target companies so that you can keep track of where your CV has gone. A company receiving your CV multiple times will devalue your position as a candidate.

A good recruitment agency will stay with you through the whole process to offer guidance and assistance, sticking with you after you have started your new job to make sure you are happy with the company you have moved to.

To work with a recruitment agency who does genuinely understand the industry they are recruiting for, register your vacancy with Edge Careers here.

If you are looking for a new role and want an agency who will take the time to understand what you are looking for, then register your CV with us here.

What Not To Do At Interview

For many people, interviews can be a scary and nervy experience, so we have put together 5 things you should definitely NOT do during interview.

The below points may seem obvious, but you would be amazed at how many people forget these basics and the importance of these from an interviewer’s prospective.

1 – Show up late

Showing up late to your interview immediately gives your potential employer a bad first impression. They will be thinking if you can’t turn up on time to an interview, can you turn up on time to work? It is important to remember if you are going to be late due to unforeseen circumstances i.e. traffic, then give either your recruitment consultant or the offices/interviewer a call to let them know in advance.

2 – Answer a phone call or reply to a text

Answering your phone during an interview is a big no. This will make the interviewer think that you are disinterested in the role and you will come across as rude. If there is a genuine reason for you to need to answer your phone, then you should  inform the interviewer beforehand so they understand, otherwise it is best to put your phone on silent or switch it off.

3 – Act unprofessionally

Acting unprofessionally in an interview is a sure fired way not to get the job. If you are sat across from the interviewer chewing gum, twirling your hair or swearing, they will be thinking if this is how you act in an interview, how will you act at work or in front of clients?

4 – Dress inappropriately

Dressing inappropriately will give off the wrong impression from the start, unless the interviewer has otherwise stated, you should always show up to an interview in smart clothing. This will show the interviewer that you have made an effort and give them a professional impression.

5 – Be disengaged

Being disengaged will make the interviewer think that you do not want the role, fidgeting, mumbling, not answering questions and avoiding eye contact are all things that will make the employer think that you are not interested in the role. It is important to be clear in your communication with the interviewer, answering questions and making eye contact will all make the interviewer engage with you and believe that you are interested in getting the job.

Avoid doing any of these five points and you will give the interviewer the right impression from the start of the interview. These combined with your experience, which they will have already shown an interest in by inviting you to an interview, will put you in a good position to move forward in the recruitment process.
