The Finance at Edge Careers is Expanding

We have taken on a new accounts assistant to help with the workload of the Finance team as the Edge Careers business continues to grow.

We are excited to welcome Sandro Garcia to our Finance team. He is a young and enthusiastic individual who has accrued vital administration and finance experience prior to joining us. Outside of work, Sandro is a big sports enthusiast and has been from a young age, his favourite sport being American Football, which he plays competitively for Swindon town.

Rob Hyde Wins Septembers Fantasy Football Prize

What Are The Issues Facing Construction?

Combining a boom in construction projects with a skills shortage means that the industry is entering a very challenging time.

In a recent survey carried out by the RICS, they found that 66% of construction professionals see the skills shortage as the biggest restraint on future growth.  They also found that the roles construction companies are most struggling to recruit for are Quantity Surveyors with 57% of employers having trouble finding suitable candidates and Bricklayers with 59% of employers having difficulties in recruiting for the right staff.

According to figures by the CIOB, the construction industry will need almost 224,000 new recruits by 2019 to keep up with the current demand and 17,000 managers are expected to be needed by 2020. With 19% of current construction workers due to retire in the next 5 to 10 years and the CITB showing that only 22,496 young people began their career in the construction industry as an apprentice in 2015, the big question remains, where will the future construction workforce come from?

Another issue facing construction is the number of women working within the industry. Women only make up 11% of the construction workforce and only 1% of the workers on-site are women.

Edge Careers’ Great Weight Loss Challenge

With both men actively trying to lose weight, Edge Careers thought we would give them a little incentive and so has set them the challenge of losing 3 stone in just 20 weeks.

What is the Future of Construction

Advancments in technology have led to many industries becoming more efficient and keeping their costs down, but has it come at a greater price with workers being replaced by machines?

When it comes to the construction industry, the advancements are clear for everyone to see.

Construction Management Software

Today’s task management software is designed to increase productivity and keep everything on schedule, proving an invaluable resource to construction companies to monitor progress and keep all members of the project fully informed, in real time, of actual progress versus scheduled goals.

Budgeting, billing processes, and time management tools streamline the entire process from start to finish. Companies offer top-of the range, constantly evolving software to match the ever changing and demanding needs of this sector.

Building Information Management, or BIM, contains most of these solutions and more to provide the ability to create a 3D building plan and combine it with a construction schedule.

Computer Aided Design  

CAD has enabled construction to begin before the design is fully complete, allowing for fast-track construction and reduced interferences. It improves procurement and performance systems, allowing a host of possible issues to be tackled before physical work begins, significantly reducing the risk of errors and thus reducing the risk of going off-budget or off-schedule.

Blueprint Apps  

Gone are the days of offices on site overflowing with documents. Now, the main player is the application-ridden tablet. A device as useable in the field as in the office. These planning apps have given us the ability to oversee plans and make changes digitally.

Possible obstacles can be accounted for and tweaked before beginning physical work to save having to change them (usually at great cost) due to an oversight. These apps allow for direct communication, in real time, between the owner, project managers, and other staff, so everyone is kept in the loop, 24 hours a day.

Drones

The introduction of drones in the past decade has changed the face of the construction industry, and is likely to continue its trajectory into the next one.

  • In surveying and mapping out the specified area, their value lies in being able to go where humans and heavy machinery can’t, monitoring progress in real time and the ability to make changes to the plan according to the drone footage. This footage can then be compared to blueprint plans and deviations can be noted and dealt with accordingly, saving time, money, and resources.

Health and Safety

The importance of the health and safety of workers has grown exponentially and now safety on site is of paramount importance, helped in part by the legal regulations that have sprouted up around every industry.

  • Headsets, halo lights, safety glasses, and responsive clothing are but a few of the safety gadgets having undergone modernization, turning outdated and often un-adhered-to health and safety regulations into routine, standard on-site precautions.

 

But will these advancements go further and see the construction worker being replaced by machines? We have already seen companies testing bricklaying robots, which, it is claimed are a lot more efficient than human construction workers (View the bricklaying robot here).

Although these enhancements in the industry are impressive and very efficient, it has already been forecasted by the world’s economic forum that 5 million jobs will be replace by artificial intelligence by 2020, but can we really rely on technology to replace a human’s eye for detail and problem solving?

When we take a look back over the years we can see the way recruitment has changed and the impact social media has had on it.

There are not many recruiters left that will adopt the traditional method of recruiting, where they are constantly on the phone researching companies, finding out who’s who in the industry and work off the back of who they know to gain referrals.

Nowadays a lot of recruiters will sit on LinkedIn trawling for candidates and contacting them via inmails, losing the personable approach of a phone call.

So which method is the best for recruiters?

According to a survey carried out by Jobvite:

94% of recruiters use, or plan to use social media for recruiting and employers who used social media to hire found a 49% improvement in candidate quality over candidates sourced only through traditional recruiting channels.

The preferred social media for recruiters is LinkedIn with 94% of recruiters being active on there. But in comparison only 36% of candidates are actually active on there, so the number of suitable candidates are limited, which points us back to traditional methods where you can find more candidates for roles.

Would modern recruiting methods come across as lazy?

In comparison to those who have been in the industry for a number of years it probably does, but in reality isn’t it just moving with the times? Everything has been made easier and quicker through the advancements in technology and this should also be the case for social media forming a key part in recruitment.

  4. Anyone can work in the construction industry – Not at all. Construction workers are now required to attend and pass training courses to be allowed onto a construction site, and the higher up the career ladder you go the more qualified you have to be.
  5. Construction is all about swinging tools – Again wrong. Construction projects start a long time before a construction worker actually steps foot onto a site, from designing, planning, estimating and bidding, there are a number of functions that need to come together before the building actually begins.

How Should you Discuss Salary at an Interview?

Discussing a salary is one of those topics that some people don’t want to discuss, but at an interview it is a topic which is likely to come up. Edge Careers has taken a look at how you can best discuss your salary at the interview stage.

Don’t Under or Over Sell Yourself

When an interviewer asks you what your current salary is,  it is important that you tell the truth, as giving a false figure can have a disastrous effect on your chances of landing the role.

Everyone wants to move for more money, but if you sell yourself as earning more than you actually are, thinking that you can get a bigger pay rise, you can actually price yourself out of the job altogether and there is a chance you will be caught out and find yourself out of the running for the job.

The same can be said for underselling yourself, if your current salary is well below what this job is advertised as, then the interviewer will be thinking “are you at the right level for the role?” But it is still important to tell the truth, if your salary is well below the amount on offer and you are at the same level as the role you are interviewing for, then approach the subject yourself and say that you feel that you are significantly under paid in your current role.

When Should the Topic be Brought Up?

We believe that it is important to discuss what you can offer the company and the role before you discuss your salary. If your salary is brought up at the beginning of an interview, simply say that you would prefer to better understand the role and the company and discuss what you can offer before discussing your remuneration. This is so the interviewer is not put off by your salary requirements from the get go and will better understand what you can offer and if you would be “value for money”

Offer at Interview

If you have impressed the interviewer enough to be offered the job at the interview stage, it is important that you don’t let your adrenaline take over and instantly accept the job. You need to take the time to think about the offer, so a simple response would be, “thank you, it sounds like a great opportunity and I am very interested. I would like to take some time to consider your offer and I will be in touch shortly to let you know my decision”. Although you need the time to consider your options, you do need to do it quickly so that the employer does believe that you are genuinely interested in the role.

Charity Dinner Raises £3,000

Charity Evening

Edge Careers along with the group businesses for brum have made a donation to the great charity Alex’s Wish. Stuart Smith, one of our principal recruitment consultants, was humbled to be invited as guest of Morgan Sindall for a charity dinner to raise money for the great cause. Alex’s Wish was created to fund the battle against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a severe and progressive muscle wasting disease. Alex is 10 years old and if the disease follows its classic course it will leave him in a wheelchair by age 12 and paralysed by his teens and not live beyond his twenties. At this moment in time there is no cure, this is why Alex’s Wish was created. Their mission is to raise £1m by 2020 to get into the hands of the world’s leading scientists who have the best chance of finding a cure.

The evening managed to raise £3,000 for the charity and was supported by guest speaker and England Rugby world cup winner, Neil Back.

Morgan Sindall’s attendance at the charity dinner was only a small part of their ongoing support of Alex’s Wish, with members of the company completing a charity bike ride form London to Paris, which raised over £22,000.
