Is this what construction will be like in 2045
Equipment hire specialist Hewden has taken a peak into the future of construction to predict how the industry will look in 2045.

The report envisages a world of 30km tall buildings with spaceports, driverless vehicles and mini-cities in the sky while site workers will have super-strength exoskeletons creating half-man, half-machine operatives that can utilise a range of attachments.

Hewden’s 2045: Constructing the Future report has been developed by renowned futurologist Ian Pearson and was launched today to coincide with the date Marty McFly and Dr Emmett Brown time-travelled to in the ‘80s blockbuster movie, Back to the Future II.

The report takes a look at what the UK might look like in another 30 years, covering areas such as building design, transport, technology and health and safety.

Pearson said: “While we’re not all flying around in cars, there are a number of things, such as the use of drones, video conferencing and some of the physical structures that were portrayed very accurately in the movie.

“The acceleration of new technology has and will continue to be the biggest driver for change. As will look forward another 30 years we can expect to see a very different but exciting world.”

Some of the key findings of the report include:

Skyline 2045

The London Skyline in 2045 will have super-tall structures and a spaceport

Cars 2045

In 2045 driverless vehicles will be the norm. Unlike the more futuristic curved look, vehicles will likely be box shaped to maximise on-street capacity.

Exo Skeleton 2045
Builders will have super-strength exoskeletons creating half-man, half-machine workers that can utilise a range of attachments.

Pearson added: “Augmented reality will play a major role in the aesthetics of a building.

“It’s likely that many buildings will actually be very plain, instead using AR to create visually appealing environments for those that visit.”

Heavily populated cities such as London are likely to change the most, according to the report, with space travel and development of new cities within cities some of the major changes.

Pearson said: “The use of super-strong carbon-based materials will enable us to build incredibly tall structures, some even up to 30km high.

“This will make space travel more convenient and for major transport hubs like London, going into space will be a regular occurrence in 2045.

“A few of these structures may be so large that their capacity enables them to function as small cities in their own right, with all the usual city functions mixed within the same building.”

Paramount Kent Artists Impression

Chinese construction firm SinoFortone is to plough £100m into plans to build Britain’s biggest theme park in North Kent.

The proposed £3.2bn London Paramount Entertainment Resort is planned to be built on a 388-acre site at Swanscombe Peninsula, formerly the country’s largest cement plant, which closed in 1993.

The Disneyland-style park is due to open in 2021 with a host of theme park rides based on popular television programmes and Hollywood films, as well as a theatre, water park, hotels and nightclubs.

It is yet to win planning permission, but has been classified as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project.

The theme park is being developed by London Resort Company Holdings, a Kuwaiti-backed property firm, which is chaired by former transport minister Steven Norris.

It is the first of a string of China-related investments expected to be unveiled alongside President Xi’s state visit, the first from China in a decade.

Burj Khalifa, do you know what it took to build the worlds tallest free standing building?

Burj Khalifa

Over 45,000 m3 (58,900 cu yd) of concrete, weighing more than 110,000 tonnes were used to construct the concrete and steel foundation, which features 192 piles buried more than 50 m (164 ft) deep. Burj Khalifa’s construction will have used 330,000 m3 (431,600 cu yd) of concrete and 39,000 tonnes (43,000 ST; 38,000 LT) of steel rebar, and construction will have taken 22 million man-hours.

Exterior cladding of Burj Khalifa began in May 2007 and was completed in September 2009. The vast project involved more than 380 skilled engineers and on-site technicians. At the initial stage of installation, the team progressed at the rate of about 20 to 30 panels per day and eventually achieved as many as 175 panels per day.

The tower accomplished a world record for the highest installation of an aluminium and glass façade, at a height of 512 metres. The total weight of aluminium used on Burj Khalifa is equivalent to that of five A380 aircraft and the total length of stainless steel bull nose fins is 293 times the height of Eiffel Tower in Paris.

In November, 2007, the highest reinforced concrete corewalls were pumped using 80 MPa concrete from ground level; a vertical height of 601 metres. Smashing the previous pumping record on a building of 470m on the Taipei 101; the world’s second tallest tower and the previous world record for vertical pumping of 532 metres for an extension to the Riva del Garda Hydroelectric Power Plant in 1994. The concrete pressure during pumping to this level was nearly 200 bars.

The amount of rebar used for the tower is 31,400 metric tons – laid end to end this would extend over a quarter of the way around the world.

3D House printing

How 3d printing is transforming the construction industry.

A Chinese construction company has found a way to make houses pop up at the press of a button – 3D printed homes that could be assembled in under 3 hours. The two-storey show villa was built from pre-constructed components printed in a factory and later lifted into place using a crane, all under 3 hours, signalling a change for the global construction sector.

The new technology used by the Zhuoda Group, based in Xi’an, central China, is being kept carefully under wraps. While most construction companies using 3D printing technology use a cement base, the group is using an unnamed material for its villas. The printed homes cost just 3,000 Yuan (£300) per square metre to build. Compared to an average price of 36,000 Yuan (£3,600) per square metre retail price of apartments in China today, the profit margins are impressive.

They have already applied for more than 20 patents for their unique homes but the villas are not yet available on a mass scale. However, consumers are soon expected to be able to buy made-to-order villas with the rise of 3D printing technology among construction companies.

Another company based in Shanghai built the world’s tallest 3D printed building in January. The villa built by Winsun is five storeys high and cost 1 million Yuan (£100,000) to construct. The construction firm used four huge 3D printers, which are 21 feet tall and as wide as a basketball court.

The houses are built wall by wall from an ‘ink’ made up of a mixture of cement and environmentally friendly construction waste and claims to make walls that are even stronger than concrete. The company is now working in Dubai to build the world’s first fully 3D-printed office.
