Olivia Finn becomes the latest recruiter to join our dynamic London office.

Olivia Finn - M&E Manager - London

Olivia has worked the majority of her career within sales, initially starting off selling “Spa Days” to unsuspecting targets on the streets of SOHO during University holidays. Following this, Olivia became a Project Manager within the London residential market selling refurbishment packages, initially for a developer for four years and then for her own business for a further three.
Deciding it was time to expand her skill set, Olivia joined a boutique search firm in London, where she spent five years honing her skills as a recruitment consultant specialising in Building Services and heading up their M&E Division.

Working out of our London office, Olivia will be heading up M&E recruitment for the region.

We would like to wish Olivia the best of luck in her new role, where we are sure that she will use her existing skills and experience to become a vital member of the London team.

What is the Future of Construction

Advancments in technology have led to many industries becoming more efficient and keeping their costs down, but has it come at a greater price with workers being replaced by machines?

When it comes to the construction industry, the advancements are clear for everyone to see.

Construction Management Software

Today’s task management software is designed to increase productivity and keep everything on schedule, proving an invaluable resource to construction companies to monitor progress and keep all members of the project fully informed, in real time, of actual progress versus scheduled goals.

Budgeting, billing processes, and time management tools streamline the entire process from start to finish. Companies offer top-of the range, constantly evolving software to match the ever changing and demanding needs of this sector.

Building Information Management, or BIM, contains most of these solutions and more to provide the ability to create a 3D building plan and combine it with a construction schedule.

Computer Aided Design  

CAD has enabled construction to begin before the design is fully complete, allowing for fast-track construction and reduced interferences. It improves procurement and performance systems, allowing a host of possible issues to be tackled before physical work begins, significantly reducing the risk of errors and thus reducing the risk of going off-budget or off-schedule.

Blueprint Apps  

Gone are the days of offices on site overflowing with documents. Now, the main player is the application-ridden tablet. A device as useable in the field as in the office. These planning apps have given us the ability to oversee plans and make changes digitally.

Possible obstacles can be accounted for and tweaked before beginning physical work to save having to change them (usually at great cost) due to an oversight. These apps allow for direct communication, in real time, between the owner, project managers, and other staff, so everyone is kept in the loop, 24 hours a day.

Drones

The introduction of drones in the past decade has changed the face of the construction industry, and is likely to continue its trajectory into the next one.

  • In surveying and mapping out the specified area, their value lies in being able to go where humans and heavy machinery can’t, monitoring progress in real time and the ability to make changes to the plan according to the drone footage. This footage can then be compared to blueprint plans and deviations can be noted and dealt with accordingly, saving time, money, and resources.

Health and Safety

The importance of the health and safety of workers has grown exponentially and now safety on site is of paramount importance, helped in part by the legal regulations that have sprouted up around every industry.

  • Headsets, halo lights, safety glasses, and responsive clothing are but a few of the safety gadgets having undergone modernization, turning outdated and often un-adhered-to health and safety regulations into routine, standard on-site precautions.

 

But will these advancements go further and see the construction worker being replaced by machines? We have already seen companies testing bricklaying robots, which, it is claimed are a lot more efficient than human construction workers (View the bricklaying robot here).

Although these enhancements in the industry are impressive and very efficient, it has already been forecasted by the world’s economic forum that 5 million jobs will be replace by artificial intelligence by 2020, but can we really rely on technology to replace a human’s eye for detail and problem solving?

Writing a great CV

What should you write on your CV

The difference between writing a good CV and an average CV can be the difference between you landing your dream job or not. The first impression any potential employer will make of you will come from the CV that has been submitted to them.

Edge Careers take a look at a few points that will help you to write a great CV.

Contact details

  • Be sure to include as many contact details as possible so that a recruiter or employer can easily reach you.
  • Try to make your email address professional, many people set up an email address as a teenager and set it as something funny, if it is possible it would be advisable to have an email address in a format like this, firstname.lastname@hotmail.com.

Previous Employment

  • Write in reverse chronological order and include starting and leaving dates for each position.
  • Include concise details of each position you have had, your responsibilities and what you achieved in the role.
  • If there are any time gaps between employment, explain what you were doing in that time, for example travelling, at college, etc.

Qualifications

  • There is no need to list all of your Standard Grade/GCSE subjects, simply put the number of GCSE’s achieved and the key subjects e.g. 10 GCSEs A-C including Mathematics and English. Exclude any grade lower then a ‘D’.
  • A-Level and degree qualifications can be listed. The grades do not have to be included.
  • List only the academic centers where a qualification was earned in reverse chronological order with dates.

Hobbies and Interests

  • If you do choose to include this section, it can be used to give an insight into your personality.
  • Consider carefully what you are putting down and its implications. Team events indicate that you are a team player, other activities such as Scouting and Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme show commitment and the fact that you are not adverse to a challenge.
  • Be specific, and show what you learnt or gained from the activity such as perseverance, teamwork, communication skills.
  • Keep this section very brief and do not list all of your interests and hobbies.

General

  • It is always important for you to proof read and spell check your CV. Maybe have a friend or family member read through it, before you submit it to any potential employer, as spelling errors and sloppy grammar won’t portray you in the best way.
  • Don’t lie on your CV as you will inevitably be caught out.
  • Including personal details in your CV is optional. If you do choose to include them, don’t go into detail, keep it simple e.g. Married, 2 dependents.
  • Although detail is needed in some areas of your CV, sometimes a shorter CV can carry just as much weight as a long winded one.
